CFT's Predictions 101: Believe in 'Bama

CFT's Predictions 101: This SEC championship game doubles as a national semifinal, but in our mind it?s also for all the marbles. Either the No. 2 Crimson Tide or No. 3 Bulldogs will earn the honor of winning the SEC?s seventh consecutive BCS title with a victory over No. 1 Notre Dame in Miami on Jan. 7.

PFT: Roethlisberger limited in Steelers' practice

Carolina Panthers v Philadelphia EaglesGetty Images

With 176 games completed, the gap has been cut from seven to two.

After a four-game sweep of our disagreements in Week 11, MDS posted another 3-1 mark in Week 12, making it very interesting over the final five weeks.

This week, we have only one disagreement.? So it?ll be down to one or back to three by Monday.? (I are good at the math.)

Of course, that doesn?t mean we?ll be right on the picks on which we agree.? But we?re doing OK.? MDS was 11-5 for Week 12, and I was 9-7.? For the season, I?m at 112-63-1, a 63.6 percent accuracy rate.? MDS is 110-65-1, which equates to 62.5 percent.

Saints at Falcons

MDS?s take: It sounds crazy to say this about a 5-6 team facing a 10-1 team, but right now the Saints are playing better football than the Falcons. Having said that, I have a hunch the Falcons will turn in their best effort of the season at home against the team that gave them their only loss.

MDS?s pick: Falcons 28, Saints 21.

Florio?s take:? An already contentious rivalry will become even more contentious now that eggs have flown into the Saints bus and former Falcons linebacker Curtis Lofton has declared that his new team, the Saints, don?t regard the rivalry as a rivalry, given that the Saints have won 11 of 13.? With the Falcons closing in on a playoff berth and sensitive about the perception that they can?t win big games at home, it?s time to drop the Saints? mark against the Falcons to 11 of 14.

Florio?s pick:? Falcons 27, Saints 24.

Jaguars at Bills

MDS?s take: Jaguars quarterback Chad Henne has been impressive enough since replacing Blaine Gabbert that I?m tempted to pick the Jags to pull off a home upset. But these are still the Jaguars, and even if Henne has improved the offense, they still have a terrible defense, plus the Bills have a big special teams edge.

MDS?s pick: Bills 27, Jaguars 23.

Florio?s take:? The Jags are riding a rare one-game winning streak.? The Bill are trying to break a not-so-rare one-game losing streak.? Home team gets the advantage, even though the Jaguars are better with Chad Henne at quarterback.

Florio?s pick:? Bills 24, Jaguars 17.

Seahawks at Bears

MDS?s take: This might be the day?s most interesting game, especially if you enjoy watching teams that play tough, physical defense. I think Seattle?s defensive front has the potential to make life a nightmare for Jay Cutler playing behind the Bears? woeful offensive line, and yet the Seahawks have struggled so much away from home that I?m taking the Bears in a close one.

MDS?s pick: Bears 14, Seahawks 13.

Florio?s take:? It?s chicken salad time for the Chicago offensive line, with failed first-round tackle Gabe Carimi being pressed into service at guard.? But Jay Cutler knows how to avoid the pressure and deliver the ball, and the Seahawks still haven?t learned how to win on the road.

Florio?s pick:? Bears 23, Seahawks 13.

Colts at Lions

MDS?s take: The Lions are playing better football than their record suggests, while the Colts are playing worse football than their record suggests. I still think Indianapolis will be a wild card team, but in this game Calvin Johnson will have a huge day against a weak secondary.

MDS?s pick: Lions 31, Colts 20.

Florio?s take:? Assuming that the Lions haven?t folded the tents after a season-crushing Thanksgiving loss, they?ve got the horses to hold off a Colts team that has yet to learn how to win away from Indy consistently.

Florio?s pick:? Lions 27, Colts 20.

Vikings at Packers

MDS?s take: Green Bay had a letdown against the Giants last week, but that won?t happen again. This is the game when the Packers pull ahead of the pack in the NFC wild card race, as well as staying within striking distance of the Bears in the NFC North.

MDS?s pick: Packers 34, Vikings 13.

Florio?s take:? Minnesota has embarked on its long-expected late-season collapse, and the Packers will be extra salty after getting peppered by the Giants.? This one could get ugly.

Florio?s pick:? Packers 34, Vikings 13.

Panthers at Chiefs

MDS?s take: It?s too late for the Panthers to get back in the playoff race, but I do see them going on a little bit of a late-season run. With Cam Newton playing well, they?ll easily win in Kansas City.

MDS?s pick: Panthers 27, Chiefs 9.

Florio?s take:? The Chiefs can?t lose every game the rest of the season, can they?? Carolina is on the road after a Monday night on the road, cramming two rounds of travel into a short week after a game in which they are feeling better about themselves than they should.? The Chiefs, if they don?t win this one, may not win another.? Ever.

Florio?s pick:? Chiefs 20, Panthers 16.

Patriots at Dolphins

MDS?s take: I like a lot about the way the Dolphins are playing, especially defensively. And the Patriots? secondary has a bad tendency to leave receivers wide open, so Ryan Tannehill may have a decent statistical game. But New England?s offense is such a well-oiled machine that I like the Patriots to get into the end zone five or six times.

MDS?s pick: Patriots 38, Dolphins 28.

Florio?s take:? The Dolphins will win if the sprinklers come on again.? And if the are loaded with hydrochloric acid and aimed at the eyes of Tom Brady and Bill Belichick.? Otherwise, advantage Pats.

Florio?s pick:? Patriots 35, Dolphins 24.

Cardinals at Jets

MDS?s take: This is a stinker of a game between two teams with all kinds of problems at the quarterback position, but it says something about how far the Cardinals have sunk that Mark Sanchez is easily the top quarterback in this game.

MDS?s pick: Jets 20, Cardinals 10.

Florio?s take:? It?s easy to assume the Jets will continue their implosion.? The schedule suggests they could win five in a row.? They may not get to 9-7, but 5-7 is looking pretty promising.

Florio?s pick:? Jets 30, Cardinals 17.

49ers at Rams

MDS?s take: I don?t think this game is going to be easy for the 49ers because St. Louis isn?t an easy place to play anymore, but in the end San Francisco just has too much power on both sides of the ball for the Rams to have much of a chance.

MDS?s pick: 49ers 24, Rams 13.

Florio?s take:? They pick up where they left off after five quarters that ended in a tie.? The Rams try to extend their 3-0-1 record in the NFC West.? The Niners are simply a better team with Colin Kaepernick at quarterback.

Florio?s pick:? 49ers 31, Rams 23.

Texans at Titans

MDS?s take: The Titans fired offensive coordinator Chris Palmer this week, as if that will fix anything. The Titans? problems go much deeper than the offensive playcalling, and the Texans ? getting a well deserved three extra days of rest following their back-to-back overtime games the last two weeks ? will look fresh and win this one handily.

MDS?s pick: Texans 41, Titans 20.

Florio?s take:? Yes, before the season I thought the the Titans, who were unexpectedly 9-7 in 2011, were poised to topple the Texans.? It hasn?t happened.? And it won?t happen for the Titans on Sunday, not with the Texans closing in on their second straight playoff berth.

Florio?s pick:? Texans 27, Titans 14.

Buccaneers at Broncos

MDS?s take: The Bucs are thin in the secondary after trading away Aqib Talib and losing Eric Wright to a suspension, and Peyton Manning is the last quarterback you want to face when you?re thin in the secondary. Manning will pick the Bucs? defense apart. The best chance the Bucs have of keeping this game close is to control the ball by running Doug Martin, but in the end Manning will just have too much for Tampa Bay.

MDS?s pick: Broncos 35, Buccaneers 24.

Florio?s take:? With Eric Wright suspended and Aqib Talib long gone, it?ll be a long day for the Bucs? porous pass defense.

Florio?s pick:? Broncos 31, Buccaneers 21.

Steelers at Ravens

MDS?s take: The Steelers need this one, but they?re not going to get it. Without Ben Roethlisberger the Steelers just aren?t a very good team, and I expect the Ravens to earn a big win that helps them pull away in the AFC North.

MDS?s pick: Ravens 23, Steelers 7.

Florio?s take:? With or without Ben Roethlisberger, the Ravens are tough to beat at home.? And even though it would be fitting for the Steelers to win in Baltimore after the Ravens won in Pittsburgh, the Ravens are the better team ? and the Steelers are on the verge of a late-season implosion.? All that?s left is for coach Mike Tomlin to vow to ?unleash hell.?

Florio?s pick:? Ravens 19, Steelers 13.

Browns at Raiders

MDS?s take: Both teams are 3-8, but they?re a different 3-8. The Browns are a 3-8 team that is playing competitive football and has a lot of young guys who look hungry. The Raiders are a 3-8 team that just wrapped up an 0-4 November in which their four losses came by a total of 90 points. The Browns will go into the Black Hole and come out with their first road win of the season.

MDS?s pick: Browns 21, Raiders 17.

Florio?s take:? The Browns are better than their record suggests.? The Raiders are worse.? With Browns players trying to save the job of their head coach (and in turn their own jobs), Cleveland has more incentive to try to emerge with a win.

Florio?s pick:? Browns 17, Raiders 13.

Bengals at Chargers

MDS?s take: The Bengals are rolling and the Chargers are reeling. Marvin Lewis will take another step toward the playoffs while Norv Turner takes another step toward the unemployment line.

MDS?s pick: Bengals 24, Chargers 14.

Florio?s take:? San Diego?s AFC North tour continues, and they wish it wouldn?t.? After losing to the Browns and to the Ravens, a surging Cincinnati team is ready to keep pushing toward their first consecutive playoff appearances in non-strike years.

Florio?s pick:? Bengals 27, Chargers 17.

Eagles at Cowboys

MDS?s take: The Eagles have given up on the season. At this point I don?t think I?d pick them to beat anyone, and I certainly won?t pick them to win on the road against a Cowboys team that still has slim playoff hopes.

MDS?s pick: Cowboys 28, Eagles 20.

Florio?s take:? Philly is in a full-blown free fall.? After seeing them lose to the lowly Panthers, I?m done picking them until next September at the earliest.? The Cowboys aren?t much better, but they?re good enough (and sufficiently healthier) to get it done.

Florio?s pick:? Cowboys 34, Eagles 20.

Giants at Redskins

MDS?s take: The Redskins have done a great job of pulling themselves back into NFC East contention, and if you want to see an interesting playoff race in December you should be rooting for the Redskins to beat the Giants on Monday night. But Robert Griffin III playing so well as a rookie has masked the fact that the Redskins have big problems on both sides of the ball. The Giants will be too much for them.

MDS?s pick: Giants 34, Redskins 17.

Florio?s take:? The Giants have awoken from their slumber.? That may not be enough to contain a streaking RG3 in his Monday night debut.? Forced to make a choice, however, let?s stick with the team that has shown that it still has the ability to periodically play up to its potential.? Especially when it has to.

Florio?s pick:? Giants 31, Redskins 27.

Question: should someone be unable to post for a certain amount of days, as long as they give notice before inactivity, they can stay in the roleplay?

I have in mind a character, but I doubt I'll be using pictures.

That's totally fine as long as I am notified and you do, in fact, return. (:

OH! And I'm going to be adding two things to the character application: occupation and role.

Ah! I'm relieved!

Anyway, I don't know whether to go with the sexy guy or the country boy. He will be a bit strict in his ways, given how he was raised. I'll try to submit a profile tomorrow.

Sounds cool, I will probably accept the characters I like best tomorrow night or Saturday morning. (:

Oh! And if you're not going to have a picture, please add an 'appearance' section and make it pretty detailed. (:

I hope you don't mind what I have in the personality and history sections of Nicolas. I figured I put all that in there because I can play characters better if they are that way. (Kind of based on my own personality. I'm not very emotional, either, or so my mom says.)

EDIT: Because of work, I will be busy some days. I'll keep you informed based on my schedule, which changes every week.

Mississippi's only abortion clinic fights to stay open

By NBC News and Reuters

Mississippi's only abortion clinic will have to close unless a federal judge halts a new state law requiring its physicians to obtain admitting privileges to local hospitals, according to a court motion filed on Wednesday.

In the motion, the Jackson Women?s Health Organization renewed its request for a federal judge to prevent state officials from enforcing a law which went into effect on July 1.

Under the new law, the clinic must hire a doctor who is a board-certified OB-GYN and who also has admitting privileges to a local hospital where patients may be referred if further treatment is needed.

The clinic's providers are board-certified OB-GYNs, but the only one with admitting privileges when the law passed provides limited service at the clinic. Currently on the clinic?s website is a statement seeking a doctor who could perform abortion care for patients up to 16 weeks in the pregnancy.

Mississippi, which had as many as 14 abortion providers in the early 1980s, has some of the country's strictest abortion laws and one of the lowest abortion rates. It also has the highest teen pregnancy rate in the United States - more than 60 percent above the national average in 2010.

In 2010, the latest year for which figures are available, 2,297 abortions were performed in Mississippi with no deaths and one complication, according to the health department.

Any facility in Mississippi that performs 10 or more abortions a month or 100 or more in a year needs a license from the state. The Jackson Women?s Health Organization in Jackson has been the sole licensed abortion clinic in the state since 2002.

Supporters of the law have made it no secret they would like to end all abortions in Mississippi, although they have also said it was designed to protect women?s health.

"It is now clear that plaintiffs have no hope of being able to comply with the Admitting Privileges Requirement," said the filing by the New York-based Center for Reproductive Rights, which represents the clinic in court.

The state Department of Health, tasked with enforcing the law, gave the clinic until January to comply.

But clinic owner Diane Derzis told Reuters she sent applications on behalf of all the physicians to every hospital within a 30-mile radius. All of the hospitals ultimately rejected the requests or refused to even consider them, she said.

Jackson Women's Health Organization, based in the city of Jackson, has operated in the state for 17 years and has been Mississippi's only clinic since 2002. Its closure would mean an end to elective abortion in the state and would force women to travel elsewhere for the procedure.?

10 Apps I Can't Live Without - Business Insider

Steve Kovach, Business Insider

If you have a smartphone, you know how important apps are to the experience.

Apps make our phones personal, more useful, and fun.

Maybe I take my apps a bit more seriously than most because I write about them everyday.

But I also try a lot of apps out?which makes the ones I stick with all the more interesting.

Is SEO still a viable traffic solution online or has it's time passed ...

Is SEO Still A Viable Traffic Solution Online Or Has It?s Time Passed?

Is SEO Still A Viable Traffic Solution Online Or Has It?s Time Passed?

There was a time online where it was only possible to drive traffic to your website effectively by leveraging the power and reach of the major search engines. And while search engines like Google still play a huge role in the way we find content online, the truth of the matter is that the social web has changed the game completely. We?re counting more and more on people rather than machines to recommend the kind of solutions that we?re looking for, to guide us to the kind of content we need. And while we?re still in the infancy of this stage of the web, it only looks like it?s getting stronger and stronger.

So does that mean that the world of SEO is dead and gone, and that it?s time to shift our traffic methods to newer and shinier tools and tactics?

Not hardly.

SEO is still an effective method of driving traffic ? but don?t have it be your only solution

The fact of the matter is that the world of SEO, as ever shifting and changing as it is, is still the number one way people find what they?re looking for online. While there are significant inroads being made by other technologies and tools online, the fact remains that Google and the others are still the go to solution for finding things online ? and that doesn?t look like it?s going to change any time soon.

But that doesn?t mean that you should only focus on SEO work to boost your traffic ? the recent Panda and Penguin changes alongside of Google?s push into the social networking world should have shown you how dangerous that line of thinking is. Nothing could be worse than putting all of your hopes and dreams into a single traffic basket that has shown itself to be so volatile. The SEO world is an every shifting foundation of sand, but it?s still a fundamental of building a business online ? you cannot ignore it and expect to win at the game of online business.

The social web has created a million and one different ways to drive traffic ? tap into them as much as possible as a secondary source of traffic

But while SEO is still king, you need to make sure you are focusing some of your attention on the other up and coming methods of traffic generation. The jury is still out on using Twitter or Facebook to drive traffic to your money sites, but the concept and fabric of the web has changed to a more social means. Now more than ever the power of word of mouth advertising has reached amazing heights, and we can?t just rely on machines to push traffic to us anymore ? especially since Google and the others are actively trying to stop us from being able to game the system to our benefit. You need to devise new traffic sources to work in conjunction with your SEO work, not to the exclusion of it.

Top 10 at Home Exercises | Pittsburgh Fitness

by Pat Hanavan on November 28, 2012

Post image for Top 10 at Home Exercises

You don?t need to go to the gym for a great work-out. Many people simply don?t have the opportunity or the desire to visit their local gym, but work out routines are vital for fitness and health. So here are the top ten exercises which you can do at home, in your own time, at your own pace.

  1. Running ? improves endurance, builds strength and is great for your cardio respiratory health. Whether you run over a specific distance, for a specific time, run outdoors or use a treadmill, running is a great basis for any exercise regime.
  2. Pullups ? actually incorporate just about every muscle in the shoulders, back, chest and core. They require very little equipment; just a pull-up bar. Maybe you?ll come across one in the park while you?re out running; or you could set something across a door frame, in the garage . . . anywhere.
  3. Pushups ? another great CrossFit exercise that actually uses the core of your upper body for strength exercises and training.? You can start off slowly but increase your goals as you go along and get stronger.
  4. Jump Rope ? is a terrific method of exercise. It burns lots of calories in a relatively short amount of time. 10 minutes of jump rope exercises can burn off around 100 calories; and its fun too.
  5. Burpees ? this CrossFit type exercise is a combination of pushups, jumps and squats; which are great for developing power, strength and endurance. They help to build up stamina and burn fats; what more could you ask for?
  6. Squats ? a brilliant method of exercising the lower body, especially the legs and butt.
  7. Superman ? this is a core exercise which is great for strengthening the lower back, and is a terrific exercise for warm-up and cool-down periods. Go on, do the Superman!
  8. Crunches ? are recommended as being one of the very best CrossFit type exercises for strengthening abdominal muscles.
  9. Lunges ? a bit like squats, this lower body exercise uses almost every major leg muscle group and can be performed in many different ways ? side lunges, walking lunges, stationery lunges, lunge jumps.
  10. Handstand push-ups ? this is one to strive for. You?ll have to start off with the regular push-ups and pull-ups, but once you?ve built a certain amount of strength and stamina you can progress to performing handstand push-ups. You don?t need any equipment and it?s a great way to improve balance and strength in the core muscles as well as the upper body.

Sen. Saxby Chambliss, Sen. Lindsey Graham, and House Speaker John Boehner: Who is willing to accept tax increases and does it even matter?

President Obama is adamant that he will only agree to a ?fiscal cliff? solution that raises tax rates on those making over $250,000. The Republicans in the majority in the House of Representatives are adamant that they will not vote for those tax increases. I asked a senior House leadership aide the chances were that Speaker John Boehner would be able to get a majority of Republicans to vote for a tax increase of any kind: ?pretty close to zero.?

If you get busy mailing your holiday cards, this issue of tax rates is the only one you need to check in on from time to time to earn your citizenship merit badge. Did Republicans in the House of Representatives agree to increase marginal tax rates? That would be news indeed. Just two years ago, the anti-tax Tea Party reinvigorated the GOP, but now its members would be voting for a tax hike. Or, if you hear the president has backed off his demand that taxes must be increased, that would be worth a Facebook posting, too. This was an election that President Obama says gave him a mandate to raise this specific tax: How could he give up so easily? Of course, if there?s no movement on either side, you can return to your more fruitful personal pursuits free from worry that a resolution is aborning.

Using this three-part filter, we can examine recent news that Republican Sens. Saxby Chambliss and Lindsey Graham have expressed support for raising revenue through the tax code as a part of a deal that would avoid the automatic spending cuts and tax increases that will come after Jan. 1. Our model tells us that the first relevant fact is that they are senators. In this drama, being a senator is not very important. Democrats control the Senate, and the majority will go along with the president. The real action of the day is between Barack Obama and John Boehner. Is there a majority of votes for a tax increase in the House of Representatives? Senators can comment on that; they can send helpful memos; they can hand out mixed nuts during negotiations; but they are in the chorus, not on stage. A few select GOP senators ?Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, conservative leader Jim DeMint?might influence House Republicans, but those men are also likely to be on the same page as House Speaker John Boehner.

The second problem our model points out for us is that Graham and Chambliss are not talking about tax rates. They?re talking about revenue increases, which is quite a different thing. They?d consider closing loopholes and limiting deductions, which would increase the share of taxes paid by the wealthy but would not raise their marginal tax rates. This puts them a bit to the left of anti-tax advocate Grover Norquist but still much farther to the right than Barack Obama, who wants marginal rates to increase at the end of the year for those making over $250,000 as they are scheduled to. Sen. John McCain, who has also indicated he is open to revenue increases through the tax code, has also said he would not support a tax increase. Sen. Bob Corker is in this camp, too, but he wants to cut tax rates.

Still, isn?t it a good sign for the president and an ultimate deal that Norquist is angry with Graham and Chambliss? Maybe, but not necessarily. Chambliss and Graham have clashed with Norquist before without corralling a host of followers in the GOP ranks. Plus, if a Republican says he is open to using the tax code to bring in revenue, they may very well hope that doing so helps them duck the accusation that they are ideologically immovable on taxes. Removed of that particular pressure, they can feel more free to ignore the president?s entreaties to embrace the more politically painful increase in tax rates.

Norquist wants any loophole closures offset with a reduction in marginal rates. That?s also John Boehner?s position. If you?re interested in the GOP vs. Grover Norquist Civil War, this is where the action is on the House side: Will a Republican member sign up for revenue increases that are not paired with a reduction in marginal tax rates? That too would put them at war with Norquist, but it still wouldn?t put that Republican in the president?s camp. It?s a sign of how far apart the president and House Republicans are that the mark of GOP apostasy is closing loopholes without cutting taxes. Obama wants Republicans to close loopholes and raise taxes.

How is this all going to get solved? Our model tells us that House Republicans have to either get their way or be bought off. The president either has to cave, allowing the Bush-era tax cuts to stay the same for the wealthy, or offer something to sweeten the deal. House Republicans owe their majority to the Tea Party. Getting them to vote for a tax-rate increase is not going to come cheap. One solution is a promise from the president and Democrats to reduce tax rates at some future date when paired with comprehensive tax reform. (Obama wants taxes to go up on those making over $250,000 now but is open to having those rates come back down as a part of reform.)

Would Republicans buy such a promise about the future? ?Why on earth would they trust that these lower rates would ever come to pass? One possible offering the president could make would be a major concession on Medicare and Medicaid. White House spokesman Jay Carney said the president was committed to hard choices. If he?s not going to bend on tax rates and has ruled out touching Social Security (as he essentially has), then there?s only one place left where the president can find real money in the budget-cutting game: health care entitlements. That would show that he was serious about shared sacrifice, and if the changes the president agrees to are large enough, they?d give Republicans cover to accept tough tax changes.

It would also be pretty big news. So let?s amend our model. If the president agrees to change the eligibility requirements for Medicare, that would be worth pausing during the office party. Then we?d have to see if House Republicans would buy it.

Revl Comes Out Of Beta, Promises To Help Students And Other Job Seekers Get Noticed

revl logoDennis Albinus recently told me that it's time for a new kind of job site, which is what the CEO is trying to build with Revl. Albinus wants job seekers to build their profiles on Revl, which is coming out of beta today. Obviously, many people already do that on LinkedIn, but Albinus argued that the existing site mostly serves older, white-collar workers. He pointed to a Royal Pingdom report which found that 79 percent of LinkedIn users are 35 or older (compared to 65 percent for Facebook and 55 for Twitter). At the same time, unemployment/underemployment numbers remain high for people under 25. So Revl is aiming for that younger crowd, as well other folks who may be reentering the job market, such as military veterans.

Explosives found under car of prominent Pakistani journalist

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - A bomb was found on Monday under the car of a prominent Pakistani journalist who the Taliban had threatened over his coverage of a schoolgirl the militants shot, his employer said.

A half-kilogram (1 lb) of explosives was found under the vehicle of the senior journalist for the Geo News television station, Hamid Mir, while parked at his home in the capital, Islamabad. A bomb disposal squad defused the bomb.

"I was told a few days ago that my name was mentioned in a letter written to the Interior Ministry and in that, there was a threat," Mir told reporters.

The government had offered a reward of 50 million rupees($500,000) for information on those responsible for the bomb, Interior Minister Rehman Malik told reporters.

Pakistan's Taliban had threatened to attack Mir and other journalists for their coverage of their shooting of teenager Malala Yousufzai in October.

Yousufzai has become prominent because of her campaigning in support of education for girls in her home district in northwest Pakistan's Swat Valley.

She is recovering in a hospital in Britain.

Her shooting was the culmination of years of campaigning that had pitted the girl against one of Pakistan's most ruthless Taliban commanders, Maulana Fazlullah.

Fazlullah and his men had taken over the Swat Valley and blown up girls' schools and publicly executed those they deemed immoral. An army offensive in Swat forced many Taliban fighters to flee.

Pakistan is one of the world's most dangerous countries for journalists, according to press freedom groups.

Eminent domain or principal reductions, the bottom line is reducing ...

By Matthew Goldstein and Jennifer Ablan

It?s been almost six months since we first reported on the plan by Mortgage Resolution Partners to find a community willing to use eminent domain to condemn and restructure underwater mortgages and pay a handsome fee to the private investment group for overseeing this process. The proposal has generated a lot interest, debate and heat, but so far? no community is yet willing to go down this road.

Still, Steven Gluckstern, chief executive of the San Francisco-based group, said he?s confident that by early next year some community?most likely one in California?will go forward with the idea of condemning underwater mortgages and rewriting them so cash-strapped homeowners can afford the payments and stay in their homes.

But Gluckstern, in an interview with ReutersTV as part of the Reuters Investment 2013 Outlook Summit, was also a bit realistic and said if nothing gets done in the first-half of next year it may be time for his group to pack it in. In the interview, Gluckstern said he and his investors were a little taken aback by the organized opposition from investors in mortgage-backed securities, who would take a financial hit in any condemnation proceeding.

It?s too soon to say what will happen but San Bernardino County, Calif., the first community to take a close look at using eminent domain is moving slowly on the controversial proposal. Some are quietly suggesting the idea is close to dead there.? Wayne County, Mich., Chicago and several towns in California are still looking at it, so who knows maybe it will happen.

Yet Gluckstern says while making money for his investors is important, he?ll be happy if the talk about eminent domain at least pushes along the cause of principal reduction. He says whether it?s eminent domain or some other mechanism, the key to getting the housing market truly fixed is helping the millions of people stuck in mortgages they can?t afford.

The idea is a recognition of the need for principal reductions and we did help bring that idea to the forefront. You can either do that consensually or with some sort of a stick or a carrot

Damon Silvers, the chief policy maker for the AFL-CIO, one of the nation?s largest unions, said he?s not sure if eminent domain is the answer to the mortgage crisis. Speaking at the Reuters summit, he said the union took a look at the issue but didn?t come to any conclusion about it being a useful tool to fix the mortgage crisis.

But Damon said housing remains the biggest obstacle to getting the U.S. economy growing at the kind of pace that can lead to meaningful consumer spending and job creation. And he said the answer is reducing mortgage principal?which he said everyone has known for the past several years.

If nothing else, the next few months of 2013 may be a pivotal time for learning if something meaningful is going to happen with the underwater mortgage problem.

ANALYSIS: It may not be over for Israel?s Barak

Roni Schutzer / AFP - Getty Images

Israel's Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Monday announces that he is quitting political life after a decades-long career that also saw him serve as prime minister.

    By Martin Fletcher, NBC News

    News analysis

TEL AVIV, Israel ? Internet forums in Israel sprang to life when Ehud Barak made his surprise announcement that he would retire from politics in eight weeks. The overwhelming sentiment on Ynet and other newspaper forums ? good riddance.?

But the key question is, does he mean it? Consider his background.

Israel?s most decorated soldier, universally recognized as a brilliant special forces officer, in the army for 36 years.?When he went into politics he became foreign minister within two years, then prime minister and now defense minister.

And he?s 70 ? not at all old in Israeli politics.

Now think of the reasons he gave in his press conference to end his spectacular career in Israel?s military and political power centers: to spend more time with his family. "I want to study, write, live and have a good time," he said.

What Gaza fighting taught Israel about possible war with Iran

Barak has already earned considerable wealth through lectures and business consulting, and has a reputation among Israelis for enjoying the high life. So much so that to counteract that reputation, which he feared would hurt him in the polls, he sold his apartment in the plush Akirov Towers in Tel Aviv and bought an apartment in a more modest new building.

But that was in March when retiring from politics must have been the last thing on his mind.

Kobi Gideon / GPO via Getty Images

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (L) and Ehud Barak visit Israel's northern Israeli border with Syria on November 14 in an image provided by the Israeli Government Press Office (GPO).

At the time he wrote on his?Facebook?page?that his older home??gives a sense of alienation and detachment from the public and so we decided to move to a smaller and less expensive apartment.?

So the idea that Barak would decide to devote the rest of his life to having ?a good time,? just when Israel faces one of its most momentous decisions ever -- whether or not to attack Iran?s nuclear facilities -- and as Israel faces numerous military challenges, from Gaza to Hezbollah, to Iran and Syria, rings false to some analysts.

The real reason for the dramatic announcement, one political source said Monday, is that the party Barak founded in January this year, "Independence," is set to get trounced in the elections scheduled for Jan. 22. Barak would rather leave while on top, leaving the door open to a future return to politics.

    Bernat Armangue / AP

Israel's military said it had accomplished its objectives while Hamas claimed victory after the two sides exchanged deadly airstrikes and rocket attacks for over a week.

Barak came out of last week?s mini-war with Hamas in Gaza looking good. He was seen as the restraining hand, the responsible adult, in Israel?s leadership trio of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman and himself as defense minister. Israel set modest goals and achieved them with minimal loss of life at home.

After 8 days of Gaza violence, Israel declares mission accomplished, Hamas claims victory

So why retire now? The answer is that the announcement came as a surprise and it is too early to know.

One thing is for sure -- few here think he means it.

    Ashley Rindsberg: Feminizing Israel

Last week, Israel's Academy of the Hebrew Language made an interesting ruling, reported today by Haaretz (in Hebrew), which stated that titles of official government positions can and should be described with the feminine form of the relevant noun when a given position is held by a woman.

Until now there was some confusion, since unlike English every noun in Hebrew takes either a male or female gender form. So, for example, in the term, "head-of-government," which is the literal Hebrew translation of prime minister, the word "head" must be either masculine or feminine.

It's been unclear whether the noun representing the official position should refer to the person holding it, which would make the noun female if a woman were in office, or to the position itself, which would depend on the inherent gender of the word referring to the position. Golda Meir's Hebrew Wikipedia entry, for example, describes Israel's fourth prime minister as head of government in the male form.

But with this ruling Israel's next female prime minster, as well as any woman holding an official title of any kind, will be described in the feminine. It might seem a bit academic, but it's actually a significant point.

The Academy of Hebrew Language, which was created by the Israeli government in 1953, plays a mixed role as a descriptive and prescriptive body. In its latter role as grammarian, the Academy, among other duties, derives correct Hebrew words for new objects or ideas, like a recently created Hebrew word that denotes the single from a music album, which the Academy created by combining the Hebrew words for "song" and "new." (Though most Israelis still use the English "single," they just say it with a Hebrew pronunciation, "Seengel.")

But in other cases, the Academy defers to common usage, which means that it legitimizes previously incorrect words that have taken hold so extensively that denying their usage would be akin to...well, to the Acad?mie fran?aise's sometimes overly rigid insistence on correct French usage. (The French Acad?mie has for years fought calls to feminize titles of office held by women, as one example.)

But with Israel's first female prime minister, Golda Meir, having held that office more than 40 years ago, and with the previous president of the Israeli Supreme Court a woman, as well as the previous head of the opposition (and former foreign minister) and head of the Labor party both women, it seems clear in which direction the role of gender in Israeli public life is headed.

Contradicting the much beloved meme about flagging women's rights in Israel, the trend in mainstream life in Israel is moving in favor of women. It's true that in sectors like the ultra-Orthodox community women are still at a serious disadvantage when it comes to public life. Though with the enormous success of ultra-Orthodox Israeli filmmaker Rama Burshtein's recent film, this tide also seems to be turning.

Back to the Academy, the decision to feminize all official titles reveals the extent to which common usage (i.e. public opinion) and official attitudes on the topic are coalescing. It might not be a front-page headline, but it does indicate the depth of the change and, amid all the challenges both in Israel and in the region, a model for progress.

12 Depression Busters for Caregivers | World of Psychology

12 Depression Busters for CaregiversNearly one-third of people caring for terminally ill loved ones suffer from depression according to research from Yale University. About one in four family caregivers meet the clinical criteria of anxiety. And a recent study found that 41 percent of former caregivers of a spouse with Alzheimer?s disease or another form of dementia experienced mild to severe depression up to three years after their spouse had died.

Caregivers are so vulnerable to depression because they often sacrifice their own needs while tending to their loved one and because of the constant stress involved.

So here are 12 tips to help protect you from anxiety and depression and to guide you toward good mental health as you care for a relative.

    1. Acknowledge it.

If you haven?t already, say this out loud: ?This sucks.? Call a spade a spade. Granted, you don?t want to ruminate on negative thoughts for too long. But suppressing your emotions ? forcing that positive cap on each and every thought ? can actually do more harm than good. For example, a recent study in the journal ?Psychological Science? reported that people with low self-esteem who told themselves positive statements (?I?m good enough, I?m smart enough, Gosh darn it, people like me!?) actually ended up grumpier and with less self-esteem than before they started. What does this mean? Sometimes the best thing that we can do for our mental health is to be honest. And if you?re a caretaker, that means acknowledging that your situation, well, simply sucks.

    2. Educate yourself.

Relieve some of your stress by reading up on your loved one?s condition. I say that because if you?re like me, you?re probably scared. You don?t know what?s coming down the pike. You detest surprises, and ever since your loved one fell ill, your life has been full of these shockers.

There?s no way of eliminating all the surprises, of course, but if you understand the illness(es) of the person you?re nursing, then you can better predict his behavior, and can prepare yourself for what may happen in a month or in a year. You might also consider attending a caregiver training program. A recent study showed significant improvement in the quality of life of caregivers who received training. Finally, two books I recommend are ?The Caregiver Handbook: Powerful Tools for Caregiving? and ?Caregiving: The Spiritual Journey of Love, Loss, and Renewal.?

    3. Grab your own oxygen mask.

It always goes back to the ten-second spiel you get right before your plane takes off (or crashes). ?In the event of an emergency, an oxygen mask will drop from the compartment above you. Please fasten your own mask before assisting others.? Or, on Southwest airlines, they say, ?Now would be a good time to choose your favorite kid.?

Taking caring of your own needs is really as important as grabbing your oxygen mask first because you?ll be running out of breath early in the inning if you hold off on breathing until everyone is well. A study published in the ?Journal of the American Medical Association? found that stressed-out older caretakers tending to a sick spouse had a 63 percent risk of death compared to the non-stressed-out caregivers or to lucky folks who don?t have to fetch anyone a glass of water all day long.

    4. Schedule a break.

Give yourself a break every day. That DOES NOT mean that you go about your day and grab whatever free 15 minutes you can get ?before the meatloaf is done or the jello is solid ? at which time you sit down to read some depressing headlines in the paper, hoping for no interruptions. That DOES mean scheduling one half-hour every day at the same time of day that you can, guilt-free, put out your ?Off Duty? sign, and during that break no one is allowed to bother you with requests. By taking the same half-hour every day, you have a better shot at convincing your ill loved one that you really are serious about needing some time to yourself.

    5. Label your guilt.

I?m not going to tell you to get rid of your guilt. Get real, I?m Catholic! But I am going to advise you to label your guilt as helpful or unhelpful, because I bet you think you?re supposed to own all of it. The negative intrusive thoughts that tell you that you are a loser for not doing more for your loved one? Bye-bye. The voice that says you could be managing all of this mayhem a tad more effectively? Try to tease out some specific suggestions. They might help you come up with ways to better delegate responsibilities or to clean up messes without using so many cuss words.

    6. Get organized.

If caregiving is anything like parenting ? and I think it is, except for the fact that kids eventually grow up (a truth that I cling to in moments of desperation) ? a small bit of organization can go a long way.

My June Cleaver role became a tad easier when I implemented some simple household rules like: no TV before 5 pm, one treat a day, no snacks after dinner, and so on. I initially resisted this kind of structure?it?s so not my style?but I have found that it really does facilitate managing kids (and I?ll add in sick ones) ? because they both want things all the time, and that can become very wearisome. If my kids know they can?t watch SpongeBob SquarePants before 5 pm ? and I follow up consistently on that rule (the hard part) ? then they will eventually stop asking. The same goes with a sick mother or wife: if she knows dinner is at 6 every evening, and that Wednesday is pizza day, then you?ve just given her one less thing to whine about. Theoretically, of course.
