Wireless charging could hit next year, says Intel

2 hrs.

The idea of wireless charging isn't new, but it may actually arrive?in devices as early as next year, according to Intel, which has long promoted the technology. It won't replace cords entirely, but it could help your phone get through the day.

Previous wireless charging tech required special accessories like mats or cases, but the latest spec could be built right into the phone. It would have to sit about an inch from the power-giving device (your laptop, for instance), but it could be done anywhere with no fuss or extra parts.

The news Intel is touting this week is that Integrated Device Technology is working on putting out chipsets featuring Intel's?Wireless Charging Technology in early 2013. That means that companies further downstream (like Samsung and Apple) can evaluate them and decide whether to include them in their devices.

Wires are out of fashion in the tech world and anything companies can do to set themselves apart from the competition is always welcome. It's a fairly modest capability they'd be adding, though: Intel describes the system as allowing your phone to "make it through through the afternoon" after an hour of charging. And of course the two devices will have to be compatible ? but since Intel is such a giant in the industry, it may be able to make that easy.

It's not just your phone that could benefit ? imagine a cellular dongle or USB drive that could be powered on just by setting it next to your computer, or a desk that charges your laptop as soon as you set it down. That sort of thing won't be a reality for a year at the very least, and probably longer, but it's no longer just a tech demo to be shown at trade shows.

Expect more news on this front at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, where Intel tends to show off its futuristic tech even in unfinished form.

Kristen Stewart's Parents to Divorce

When it rains, it pours for Kristen Stewart.

The Breaking Dawn star's parents, Jules and John Stewart, are calling it quits. The former filed for divorce on August 17, ending their 27-year marriage.

Jules cited irreconcilable differences for the split. As for the date of separation, she says they have been estranged since back in June of 2010.

They have two sons, Taylor and Cameron, in addition to Kristen.

Kristen Stewart Hairstyle

K-Stew's parents both work in film production Jules as a writer/director and John as a producer and stage manager. She has not commented on the split.

The news comes just weeks after an affair between married director Rupert Sanders and Kristen Stewart rocked the celebrity gossip world.

Kristen's straying likely marked the end of a storybook romance with Robert Pattinson, though both have been tight-lipped since her public mea culpa.

2012 Honda Insight Mild hybrid is a good fuel efficient car

Auto review by Veeno Dewan

Two years after its introduction the Honda Insight hybrid hatchback sedan has some changes to it. But first a little background I remember driving the original Insight back in 2000 or was it 1999? Rather than the current hatchback configuration it is now the original Insight was a swoopy, radical-looking two seater coupe with its new and novel hybrid power plant. It was a fun, amazingly fuel efficient, but compromised car.

Fast forward to 2010 and the second generation Honda Insight was released as a more practical, four-door four- seater hatchback. It had a bit of a battle trying to compete with the Toyota Prius which although $4000 more expensive had the advantage of being a full hybrid as opposed to an Insights mild hybrid designation. The Insight?s IMA (integrated motor assist) technology aids the gas engine, but you cannot cruise along on electric mode only like a true hybrid.

For 2012 The Insight has some changes, of note is a price drop of around two grand to $21,990. Model wise, the LX model is now equipped with Bluetooth and electronic stability control. Meanwhile the front and rear fascia has been revised and the interior is also revamped with better quality materials. The previously cheap looking plastic has been replaced and looks more high end.
The Insight is still a mild hybrid, however, although more engineering in the form of new aerodynamics, energy efficient tires and new engine technology mean the 2012 Insight is even more fuel efficient with a fuel economy figure of .7 L/100 km city and 4.4 highway compared to 4.8 and 4.5. compared to the previous version.

The Insight features a generous front cabin with decent enough head, leg and shoulder room. As mentioned before the materials and plastics are improved with comfortable easy to enter seats. Honda?s two-tiered, asymmetrical design dash is a cool feature and is easy on the eye and ergonomically works very well with large, easy to read displays and controls. The digital speedo readout in the upper display glows either a soothing green, aqua, or dark blue, depending on your driving style. There are also lots of handy storage nooks and cubby holes- a strong point in the Insight.
There is also an adequate rear compartment with rear seats that fold flat, opening up a big cargo space and allowing for 450 litre of cargo with the seats up.
The Insight uses an 88-hp 1.3L four-cylinder engine in tandem, with a 13-hp electric motor/generator situated between the engine and transmission. Maximum output is 98 hp at 5,800 rpm and 123 lb-ft of torque from 1,000 to 1,500 rpm. The nickel-metal-hydride battery pack is located between the rear wheels out of mind.

Like most hybrids, the Insight?s brakes capture regenerative energy while braking and the Insight?s gas engine shuts down when you come to a stop, automatically starting up again when the brake pedal is released. The Insight however cannot drive in electric mode only for extended periods and will switch in and out of EV (Electric Vehicle) mode at very slow crawl speeds in traffic. Most true hybrids below a certain speed revert to electric power alone, but not the Insight.

The driver does however have some input; the ECO button to the left of the steering wheel reduces power by about four percent, reduces throttle sensitivity, and puts the power sapping HVAC in a more efficient mode for further fuel savings.

Most people who drive hybrid aim to save as much as possible on gas and to that end aids such as the MID (Multi-Information Display) system help by showing parameters such as a real-time ECO guide, current drive cycle?s economy compared to the previous three trips, average and real time fuel economy. A graphic display shows IMA power flow between engine, motor and battery and battery status. At the end of a drive when the ignition is turned off, your green score on how you have driven is displayed and you are awarded one to five leafy icons showing your ?green score?.
Drive at you most fuel efficient and you are awarded coveted ?Trophy icons.?

Not really a lot to complain about with the Honda Insight. It may not be a true hybrid but offers decent enough fuel economy you can?t ignore at a bargain price. As we know argument about the merits of the high cost of hybrid vehicles versus the time it takes to recoup savings is ongoing. However with the excellent price and value for money the Honda Insight delivers it is one hybrid car that wins that argument. Highly recommended.

Dispatches From the Republican National Convention

Last night John explained why working a convention is like covering Congress. Since I have spent the better part of the last two years writing about the world of electoral politics without even having to fake a dutiful glance toward governance or the policymaking process, I have only a distant but nonetheless fond recollection of the days where I could stumble upon a committee chairman in a stairwell.

But after having spent my days talking primarily to professionals in the political-industrial complex, the convention floor has still felt like home to me. In fact, the week has been a procession of moments bumping into subjects or sources from the Republican consultant/operative class.?The process of recognition is always the same: a familiar face, buried beneath a colorful mesh-backed trucker hat, wearing a security guard's wrist-and-earpiece set. I turn a corner into one of the floor's radial boulevards, and hustle past one of the colorful hats, vaguely aware I'm in the presence of someone familiar. Not until seconds later, a few state delegations past the spot where our paths crossed, does my mind match a name to the partially obscured face.

One of the curiosities of national party conventions is that logistical work on the floor is doled out to consultants and party operatives who for a week are given the responsibilities of bouncer. (They are suited up in colored hats adorned with Romney?s R logo.) Very few of them are necessarily built or skilled for the task; they tend to be direct-mail consultants, field tacticians, or journeyman campaign-manager types.

The colored hats have not been vested with any actual authority by the party committees. They are assigned to patrol sections of the floor, with an eye out for unruly delegates poised to mount a chair or unfurl a quarrelsome sign. All the color hats can do is ask a troublemaker to cooperate, offer a warning, and call in the black hats. The black hats, who operate under the jurisdiction of the sergeant-at-arms, have what passes for real power in the convention hall: the ability to seize a credential.

On Tuesday, as Dave has written about, there was a bona fide floor incident when Ron Paul supporters and other insurgents challenged the adoption of new delegate-allocation rules for 2016. Yesterday evening, they marshaled allies to parade through the Tampa Bay Forum?s corridors in solidarity. Otherwise the colored hats stand at the ready, available for an inquiry about mail tactics or targeting techniques.

Kim Kardashian and Old Navy settle lawsuit over ad

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Kim Kardashian has settled a lawsuit against Old Navy claiming the clothing retailer violated her publicity rights by using a lookalike in an ad.

Kardashian sued over the spot in July 2011, claiming the company's use of a model who looked like her might confuse consumers about her actual endorsements, which include a clothing store and shoe line.

No details about the settlement were filed with the court.

"The lawsuit was resolved to the mutual satisfaction of the parties," the two sides said in a joint statement.

The lawsuit was over a commercial titled "Super C-U-T-E," which featured Canadian singer-model Melissa Molinaro. The ad began airing in February 2011 and was still being used in some of the company's promotions months later, Kardashian's lawsuit stated.

An attorney for Old Navy said at a January hearing that Molinaro was famous in her own right and her appearance in the ad wasn't intended to draw similarities to the reality TV starlet.

Kardashian's attorney Gary Hecker contended that some news outlets and Twitter users noted similarities in the women's appearances.

Kardashian, 31, was seeking unspecified damages and an order barring Old Navy from using a lookalike model again.

UN chief Ban in Tehran: Is he coddling Iran or just doing his job?

The decision by Ban Ki-moon to visit Iran for the non-aligned summit was criticized by the US and others, but the UN chief sees the trip as a chance to raise international concerns with the regime, as he did Wednesday.

By Howard LaFranchi,?Staff writer / August 29, 2012

By visiting Tehran, is United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon simply doing his job as the chief representative of the international community ? or is he allowing himself to be used by one of the world?s most punished and problematic regimes?

Mr. Ban?s arrival in Tehran Wednesday for the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit and meetings with Iranian officials has spawned sharp criticism of the UN chief that he is playing into a pariah regime?s drive for legitimacy.

But before he arrived, his spokesman Martin Nesirky called Ban?s visit an ?opportunity,? saying he would not be shy about addressing ?the clear concerns and expectations of the international community,? and the UN chief wasted little time Wednesday in raising the issues of the violence in Syria and human rights abuses in Iran.

But that is unlikely to satisfy critics such as the US, Israel, Canada, and some other Western countries who see the UN chief?s visit to Iran as suggesting international acceptance of the government?s behavior at a crucial moment when it is accused of provoking the world with its nuclear program, its threats against Israel, and its role in the Syrian conflict.

Other critics say Ban?s visit suggests that a world where democracy and human rights are expanding elsewhere ? particularly in the Middle East ? is forgetting how the Iranian government crushed its own pro-democracy revolution in 2009 and is becoming more repressive of the very universal rights the UN claims to defend.

A Ban visit to Tehran ?would not send a good signal,? State Department Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said last week.

?We believe your attendance at the [Tehran] summit will only serve to legitimize a regime that is the world?s greatest state sponsor of terrorism and that is pursuing an illicit nuclear weapons program in contravention of numerous UN Security Council resolutions, and whose leader just this month has called for the annihilation of the State of Israel, the latest in a series of similar statements,? two US senators ? Kirsten Gillibrand (D) of New York and Mark Kirk (R) of Illinois ? said in a letter to Ban Tuesday.

But Ban decided to go to Tehran, both to convey to Iran, which is a UN member, the international community?s concerns about its behavior on the world stage, and to demonstrate to the NAM, the largest grouping of countries after the UN with 120 members, that he works with all UN members and doesn?t answer to any one group.

The NAM summit, which will draw leaders including Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, ?and Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, runs Thursday and Friday.?

Ban?s aides insist he is not being hoodwinked by Tehran and sees the visit as an opportunity to address some of the most pressing threats to international peace and stability.
