It's Back To The Future For E-Cigarette Ads, At Least For Now

E-cigarettes are a booming business among smokers who want to light up indoors, smokers who want to quit and, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported last month, among children.

And right now, e-cigarette-makers have a tremendous amount of latitude in the U.S. to market those products as they choose, even on television, where traditional cigarette ads have been banned since 1971.

That's because the Food and Drug Administration has not yet determined whether e-cigarettes, which deliver nicotine to the lungs through a battery-generated vapor rather than via tobacco smoke, should be considered tobacco products — with all the regulation that designation entails. The agency is expected to make its determination as early as this month.

In the meantime, "the marketing that you're seeing in these cigarettes now, it's the wild west," Stanton Glantz, director of the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education at the University of California, San Francisco, tells NPR's Melissa Block on All Things Considered. "They're using celebrities, movies, television — it's just like getting into a time machine."

Perhaps some readers will remember those heady, hazy days, when TV was filled with ads touting cigarettes' health benefits, as the center of a refreshing set break for John Wayne — even as part of a wholesome breakfast:

Not surprisingly, today's e-cigarette ads look a lot slicker than their midcentury tobacco cousins. Actors Stephen Dorff and Jenny McCarthy crank up the sex appeal in their advertisements for Blu eCigs, owned by Lorillard, which manufactures Kent and Newport tobacco cigarettes. At the bar, McCarthy says, "I can whip out my Blu, and not worry about scaring that special someone away."

And FIN electronic cigarette's national television spot goes for a stylish smash-up of vintage and modern, complete with a retro-looking diner waitress.

Andries Verleur, co-founder of VMR Products, which makes V2 Cigs, told Bloomberg News that the industry does expect the FDA will eventually clamp down on e-cigarette advertising.

As Mitchell Zeller, director of the FDA's Center for Tobacco Products, told Shots, the jury's still out on the health effects of e-cigarettes. But, for now, as NJoy King put it in its TV ad that ran during the Super Bowl in February, "the most amazing thing about this cigarette is, it isn't one."

At least, not yet.

You can hear more about the e-cigarette industry in Melissa Block's story on Monday's All Things Considered.

How to set up and start using BBM for iPhone

How to set up and start using BBM for iPhone

Now that BBM has officially launched in the App Store, you can start communicating with all of your friends across iOS, BlackBerry, and Android. BBM may look and feel a little different than the messaging clients you're already used to so here are some tips and tricks to getting up and running with BBM for iPhone:

How to add a contact with BBM for iPhone

Once you've created a BlackBerry ID and completed the setup process, you'll most likely want to start adding some contacts if you didn't do so while creating your BBID. Here's how:

  1. Launch the BBM app from the Home screen of your iPhone.
  2. Tap on the overflow icon in the bottom navigation. It is represented by three dots.
  3. Now tap on Invite to BBM.
  4. In the menu that pops up, you have lots of options when it comes to adding someone. Choose the method you'd like to use. If you know their BBM PIN number or they're with you and you can scan their barcode, those are the quickest options. If you don't have their PIN or aren't with them, you can use other contact info you have in order to add them. They'll receive a request and you'll get a confirmation once they've accepted it.

How to find your BlackBerry PIN number

BlackBerry gives you a PIN number that is uniquely yours. This 8-digit number identifies you alone on the BBM service. You can give friends or family members this and they can add you directly using your PIN. You were given this number when signing up but if you didn't write it down, that's okay, you can view it anytime you'd like through the BBM app. Here's how:

  1. Launch the BBM app from the Home screen of your iPhone.
  2. Tap on either Chats, Contacts, or Groups in the bottom navigation menu.
  3. Now at the top of the screen, tap on your photo next to your name.
  4. This brings up the My Profile screen which shows your PIN towards the bottom. Tap Copy PIN and then paste it wherever you need to.

How to update your status on BBM for iPhone

  1. Launch the BBM app from the Home screen of your iPhone.
  2. Tap on either Chats, Contacts, or Groups in the bottom navigation menu.
  3. Now at the top of the screen, tap on your photo next to your name.
  4. Type a status in the What's on your mind? box. You can also change your status from Available to Unavailable or something of the like directly underneath the *What's on your Mind** custom status section.
  5. That's all there is to it. Closing out the My Profile page will then show your update status under your name at the top of the BBM app.

How to access your BBM Barcode

BBM lets you easily pull up a barcode that contains your PIN so someone else can scan it with the BBM app on their phone. Here's how to find it:

  1. Launch the BBM app from the Home screen of your iPhone.
  2. Tap on either Chats, Contacts, or Groups in the bottom navigation menu.
  3. Now at the top of the screen, tap on your photo next to your name.
  4. On the bottom of the My Profile page, tap on Show Barcode.

How to start a multiperson chat with BBM for iPhone

  1. Launch the BBM app from the Home screen of your iPhone.
  2. Tap on the Chat icon in the bottom navigation.
  3. Tap on the overflow icon in the bottom navigation. It is represented by three dots.
  4. Now tap on Start Multiperson Chat
  5. Tap on the names of the contacts that you'd like to add and then tap Done at the top.
  6. That's it. You've now created a multiperson chat with BBM.

How to send a message to multiple BBM contacts at once

  1. Launch the BBM app from the Home screen of your iPhone.
  2. Tap on either the Chat or Contacts icon in the bottom navigation.
  3. Tap on the overflow icon in the bottom navigation. It is represented by three dots.
  4. Now tap on Broadcast Message.
  5. Fill out the info required and then tap Send when you're done.

How to create groups in BBM for iPhone

Groups are a great place to collect all kinds of things including chats, photos, events, and more. To create a new group to stay better organized inside BBM, perform the following steps:

  1. Launch the BBM app from the Home screen of your iPhone.
  2. Tap on the Groups icon in the bottom navigation.
  3. Tap on the overflow icon which is represented by three dots.
  4. Now tap on Create New Group.
  5. Give it a name and a description and tap Save.

That's all there is to it. Your group will now show up in the main Groups section and you can start saving content to it.

Microsoft offers help for bricked Surface RT tablets

Microsoft yesterday published instructions for resurrecting a Surface RT that had been bricked by the Windows 8.1 update, along with a recovery image that must be loaded onto a USB flash drive.

The company released the instructions and image two days after it yanked the Windows RT 8.1 update from the Windows Store, the sole source for consumers and small businesses.

[ Also on InfoWorld: Problems remain after Microsoft yanks Windows RT 8.1 update. | Windows 8 left you blue? Then check out Windows Red, InfoWorld's plan to fix Microsoft's contested OS. | Microsoft's new direction, the touch interface for tablet and desktop apps, the transition from Windows 7 -- InfoWorld covers all this and more in the Windows 8 Deep Dive PDF special report. | Stay atop key Microsoft technologies in our Technology: Microsoft newsletter. ]

Some users had reported that their Surface RT tablets balked at the update, then displayed a an error message stating, "Your PC needs to be repaired. The Boot Configuration Data file is missing some required information." By corrupting the boot configuration data, the update effectively "bricked" the device, rendering it inoperable.

Microsoft was circumspect in the information it released about the snafu, saying only that it was "investigating a situation affecting a limited number of users updating their Windows RT devices to Windows RT 8.1."

The company's Surface RT tablet, which debuted a year ago, has been the only Windows RT-powered device that has sold in any meaningful quantity. The fact that its own tablet -- with a specific and unchangeable set of components -- was unable to perform the update was an embarrassment to Microsoft, with some customers angry enough to assert they would return their devices.

Although some users posted recovery suggestions to Microsoft's support forum -- with others chiming in that those recommendations had worked -- the from-the-horse's-mouth instructions were more thorough, and more likely to be viewed as trustworthy by Surface RT owners.

According to the instructions accompanying the disk image, users must have a 4GB-or-larger USB drive and access to a PC running Windows 7 or later to recover the Surface RT or other Windows RT tablet. Unlike Apple's iPad, Microsoft's Surface tablets include a USB port.

The instructions were involved, and required customers to type in several commands at the Windows RT Command Prompt, a DOS-like command-line interpreter tucked inside even the newest editions of Windows. Most users will be unfamiliar with the prompt, but Microsoft spelled out exactly what to do in 15 steps.

Microsoft's disk recovery image and step-by-step instructions can be downloaded from the company's website.

Microsoft has given no hint when it will restore the Windows RT 8.1 update to the Windows Store.

HTC bosses hint at future tablet and wearable devices

Peter Chou

Chairwoman Cher Wang promises 'disruptive' tablet; CEO Peter Chou says wearables are 'a critical segment for us'

In an extensive joint interview with the Financial Times, HTC CEO Peter Chou and Chairwoman Cher Wang offered some fresh insight into the troubled smartphone maker's future plans — including hints at entries into new product categories.

The pair confirmed that Wang would be stepping up her day-to-day duties at the company, and taking on some of Chou's "sales, marketing and supplier relationships" duties, allowing him to focus on "innovation" and the product portfolio. The move will see the HTC chairwoman working six days a week at the company, as opposed to two previously, the FT reports, as HTC aims to work its way out of its current slump.

As far as future products are concerned, the HTC bosses hinted at a return to the tablet market, as well as a possible foray into the world of wearables. Chou reportedly mentions that HTC worked on a smartwatch-type device with Microsoft "several years ago," but dismissed the current crop of wearables: “It has to meet a need, otherwise if it’s just a gimmick or concept, it’s not for people’s day-to-day lives. That is an opportunity for us.” Nevertheless, he describes wearables as "a critical segment for us," adding “it matches what we do today as a mobile experience overall. That is one area we are excited about.”

Gilbert Melendez and Diego Sanchez produce instant classic at UFC 166

As Gilbert Melendez and Diego Sanchez’s lightweight battle drew to a close, UFC commentator Joe Rogan said simply, ”This is the greatest fight I have ever seen in my life.”

Considering Rogan has watched and called countless bouts, that's saying something, but it was well-earned praise.

Sanchez and Melendez slugged it out for three rounds, mixing in furious grappling action, in a bloody war that left the UFC 166 Houston crowd wanting two more rounds. Time and again, Sanchez came back after being seriously hurt – by an elbow that cut him badly over his left eye, and by punches that dropped him multiple times – to return fire on Melendez with his own thudding hooks and straights.

Sanchez’s badly bleeding cut forced the referee to temporarily stop the bout twice to have a ringside physician check it. Fortunately, the doctor let it continue and Sanchez made the most of his chance by dropping Melendez in the third round.

The final horn sounded with Sanchez and Melendez exchanging wild hooks to the head. Melendez earned the unanimous decision win but Sanchez proved that he can still hang with the lightweight’s very best.

“I went out for a second,” Melendez admitted in reference to Sanchez dropping him in the third.

“That’s what Mexicans do – we hold our ground.”

A weary Sanchez was slurring his words in his post-fight interview with Rogan, but said, “I was just going for it. That’s all I can say.”
